As you know, the Albanian American Civic League brought a delegation to Rome in September 2016 for the canonization of Mother Teresa, followed by a trip to Greci, the home town of Joe DioGuardi\u2019s father in which Skenderbeg set foot in the fifteenth century. <\/p>\n
Leka Rezniqi was among the more than 50 members of our delegation. An anchor and documentary producer at Kosova TV in Prishtina, and the head of the Kosova-Israel Friendship Association\u2014someone that I have worked with for more than twelve years on the Kosovar Albanian rescue of Jews during the Holocaust\u2014was so moved by the firsthand experience of the Arberesh in Greci that he said that he wanted to return with a camera crew.<\/p>\n
It took two years to make this happen, and it was made possible with the support of members of the Albanian American Civic League and Foundation. Last month, we shared with you the first of Leka\u2019s three documentaries on Koha-TV, which was aired on Independence Day, November 28.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, December 16, a bust of Skenderbeg, made by Gianluca Lo Conte, a local sculptor from nearby Ariano, a province of Avellino, was unveiled in a public ceremony in front of the municipal building in Greci by Mayor Nicola Luigi Norcia, and to the community\u2019s surprise, Albanian President Ilir Meta. See below photos of the event that were provided by Rita Di Minno Perillo, the Civic League\u2019s close friend and contact in Greci, and its unofficial Ambassador for the past 25 years.<\/p>\n
