Faslli HALITI<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Faslli Haliti was born in Lushnja in 1935 and worked as a teacher of art and literature there. His first poetry collection, Sot (Today), Tirana 1969, was a great success and was awarded a national prize. Soon thereafter, during the Cultural Revolution, ideological errors were \u201cdiscovered” in his literary works. He was then denied the right to publish for ten years (1973-1983) and was dispatched to the countryside to work in an agricultural co-operative. Haliti is still a much honoured poet in Lushnja, and has been the recipient of numerous awards.<\/em><\/p>\n

THE MAN WITH THE PISTOL<\/strong><\/p>\n

He waits for the autumn wind to blow,
\nNot for the trees to lose their leaves,
\nNot for the withered scraps to scatter,
\nBut for the flaps of his jacket to lift,
\nFor the pistol in his belt to be seen.
\nHe waits for the spring season,
\nNot to sow, then to reap,
\nBut to shed his jacket,
\nFor the pistol in his belt
\nTo be seen.<\/p>\n

Translated from the Albanian by Robert Elsie. This poem was called subversive and revisionist at the Fourth Plenary Session of the Albanian Communist Party in 1973. For it, Haliti was banned from publishing and sent to work in the countryside.<\/em>]<\/p>\n

BUREAUCRACY AND I<\/strong><\/p>\n

I am Count Ugolini,
\nBureaucracy, that\u2019s Ruggero.
\nUgolini and I,
\nBureaucracy gnaws at Ruggero’s head
\nAnd I have no fatigue,
\nNo mercy,
\nOnly satisfaction,
\nThat\u2019s exactly
\nWhat I feel.
\nPetraq
\n(my boss on the committee)
\nLike Ruggero
\nKeeps my seven years of studies
\nLocked in the cell that\u2019s his drawer.
\nFamished the years of my studies,
\nLike the sons of Ugolini longing for food,
\nThey wait for a scrap of learning,
\nRations from a tasty book.
\nI am studying once again
\n(by correspondence of course),
\nSuch is life.
\nI do my lessons
\nAnd then go and fetch milk for my daughter,
\nI rock my little son whenever he cries.
\nI go to work,
\nAnd come back home from work,
\nI stroke the pages of my books first,
\nAnd then stroke the cheeks of my children,
\nAnd then go for a walk out to shop with my wife.
\nThis is the only way I have
\nOf getting back at you, bureaucracy.<\/p>\n
