English<\/strong><\/p>\n

I have written before about the magnificent old tree of the Cold Water in Tepeleni. Stopping there to drink water was a must for anyone driving in the old pothole road coming to Tirana or going to the South. The tree is a magnificent Plane Tree stretching his branches all over the old road. I always wonder how old was this Tree standing there by the road. So it was with great pleasure when during my research on Edward Lear Travel to Albania in the archives of Harvard and Yale, a friend of mine in London showed me this sketch of the Tree. According to his diary after seven-hour walk Lear stopped at a beautiful fountain built by Ali Pasha beneath the plane trees. It is the first image of this Tree still standing and the Fountain that it was build by Ali Pasha who his love for his beloved birthplace was well known.<\/p>\n

So we can say for certain that the Cold Water Tree is from 1851 and it looks already few hundred years old. On this sketch. Lear had capture a beautiful moment of the Albanian travelers taking a break under the green branches, drinking water from a beautiful stone fountain. The foliage in the foreground is drawn with flair, and the placing of the figures makes a good composition. Magnificent, as you can imagine Lear with his large hat seating nearby drawing quickly as Albanians coming and going drinking or preparing the horses for the long journey ahead. What a site must have been.<\/p>\n

Than 2021, The Tree is still there (thank god) the fountain long gone, the picturesque landscape is now taken over by few ugly concrete old buildings. Local people selling bottle water \ud83e\udd23\ud83e\udd23or expired food on old bags. Some old plastic umbrellas surround the tree and a happy faced old man and his goat are the only thing that makes you smiley. A large number of cars and buses stopping there creating a noisy atmosphere and taking away that beautiful serene feeling of being under the brunches of this magnificent tree and listing to the whispering of the leaves after a long journey.<\/p>\n
